Apps can motivate people to exercise, research shows

Research is showing that creative applications can help motivate people to exercise, such as an app developed for a Stanford University study that featured a cartoon bird whose health thrived or waned depending on the user's physical activity. At George Washington University, researchers found that people lost weight after creating and following online avatars of themselves that were physically active.
