Caregiver expert calls for Medicare chronic care benefit

Private long-term care insurance does not cover all patient costs and a tax credit for family caregivers could be complicated, Suzanne Mintz, co-founder of the National Family Caregivers Association, told the federal Commission on Long-Term Care. She said adding a chronic care benefit in Medicare could help cover the cost of products and services used by caregiver families, such as nonmedical home care, safety and accessibility products, and incontinence supplies. Also, policymakers should consider that resources spent on keeping caregivers healthy can extend the time before institutional care is needed, she said.
