Family medicine becoming more popular among residents

A residency census by the American Academy of Family Physicians found that in 2013, more than 67% of family medicine residents graduated from U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical schools, compared with only 58% in 2009. "This is another indicator that medical students realize primary care is the foundation of health care. The number of students choosing family medicine in the (annual residency match) continues to increase," said Dr. Perry Pugno, AAFP's vice president for medical education. While this indicates a trend toward primary care practice, it still isn't enough to meet future demand, Pugno added.
