More research papers are open to the public

About half of the scientific papers published in 2011 are freely available, and online open access is available for more than 40% of peer-reviewed scientific articles published from 2004 to 2011, according to a Science-Metrix study conducted at the behest of the European Commission. However, policies for open access to scientific data lag behind those for open access to publications, the researchers note.
