Number of defendants sued by patent trolls has tripled, says GAO report

A Government Accountability Office report says the U.S. patent system needs improvement and recommends that broad patent applications be denied and uniform definitions on software terminology be implemented. The number of people and companies fighting patent trolls tripled since 2009, said the report, which noted that the number of lawsuits has risen 31% from 2010 to 2011.
