Rise of distributed generation could spell trouble for utility system, exec says

The rise of decentralized renewable energy generation could make the current utility system irrelevant unless utilities act to adapt, according to NRG Energy President and CEO David Crane. "Renewable energy is so unlike fossil fuel energy," added John Farrell, a senior researcher at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. "The idea that we would continue to have a centralized form of ownership and control of that system is really inconsistent with what the technology enables."
