Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will retire within the next 12 months, the company said, adding that Chairman Bill Gates will serve on a committee that will seek a new CEO. While Ballmer took the reins at the company just as the mobile revolution was getting started, former employees say the company's entrenched interests and the desire to play it safe prevented innovative new products -- such as a tablet operating system developed before the iPad -- from reaching the market under Ballmer.
