Southern to respond to petition against AP1000 reactor design

Southern Nuclear said it is studying a petition regarding its Plant Vogtle expansion project and will release a formal reply in compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission standards, said company spokeswoman Beth Thomas. Environmental groups are challenging the AP1000 reactor design that will be used in the expansion project, saying it is susceptible to a particular kind of corrosion.
