Experts: Dietary calorie reduction rule is "misleading":

Another report in The Lancet says the 3,500-calorie rule, which says that reducing calorie intake by 500 calories daily will result in about a pound of weight loss per week, may be misleading. When people reduce calories, their energy needs decrease as well and their metabolism changes, which can hinder weight-loss progress as the gap between energy intake and energy output begins to shrink, researchers said.
