Historic buildings can cause modern-era challenges

Opening a hotel in a historic district comes with its own set of challenges because of the regulatory red tape as well as the obstacles of renovating buildings that are sometimes dilapidated. "There are two types of owners, those who bought historic properties to get them redone and brought up to code; and those like us who bought a dilapidated property that had items in it we had no idea -- 100% -- what we were really getting into," said Eric Lawrence, who co-owns the Angler's Boutique Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla.
