Patent holder, public-transit group reach agreement to stop lawsuits

The American Public Transportation Association said it has reached an agreement to stop ArrivalStar from suing public-transit agencies over technology patents that monitor the real-time movement of buses and trains. Lawsuits against transportation agencies in New York City, Seattle and other areas have resulted in settlements to avoid the costlier option of fighting the firm in court, and APTA sued ArrivalStar on behalf of its members. "As far as we know right now, it looks like transit's [reasonably] well protected. That doesn't mean we won't find the next [patent-assertion entity] coming after a transit agency tomorrow or the next day," said APTA chief counsel James LaRusch.
