Pathogen type should drive care for cardiac device-related infection

A study of patients implanted with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices showed driveline infection was the most common type of LVAD-related infection, while the most common pathogens were gram-positive cocci. "Clinical manifestations and management of LVADI vary based on the extent of infection and causative pathogens. Understanding these differences is critical in making timely diagnosis and providing appropriate management interventions," researchers reported in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
