Technique helps mouse cells become insulin-making cells

U.S. researchers were able to turn exocrine cells into insulin-producing beta cells in mice with the help of direct reprogramming, a method that eliminates the need for stem cells. The technique, which uses the adenovirus to carry three necessary genes to transform the cells, could lead to regenerative treatments for patients with diabetes, heart disease and other disorders.
