Intel pays $1.4B for Infineon's mobile-chip unit

Intel will pay Infineon Technologies about $1.4 billion in cash to buy the company's wireless unit -- a deal aimed at providing Intel with the leg up in the cell phone business that it has sought for more than 10 years. "Intel strengthens its position in the fast-growing smartphone market. Infineon sells its wireless unit at a time when the more cyclical business is running successfully," said Marco Guenther, a Germany-based analyst with Hamburger Sparkasse.
