Publications unlock the content gates as hurricane lashes coast

Newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, Long Island's Newsday.com and Zinio-managed titles such as Dwell, Good Housekeeping and Popular Mechanics dropped their paywalls over the weekend to offer readers free access to their content during Hurricane Irene. For the Times, the move marked the first time it lifted the paywall since instituting it five months ago. CBS, meanwhile, used the occasion to trumpet its own free offering of New York-related content.
