Teacher: Finding an unexpected ally in standardized tests

Former teacher Ama Nyamekye describes how she came to support standardized testing for students, a mechanism she thought to be particularly harmful for teachers and students in poor schools. However, in preparing her students for state English tests, Nyamekye discovered gaps in her teaching and even her emotional investment in students. By "depoliticizing" the testing process, Nyamekye writes, teachers may find the tests offer an unbiased way to assess students' progress and improve classroom teaching.
