FDA, CDC caution against reusing fingerstick, POC devices

The FDA and the CDC issued a joint warning saying fingerstick and point-of-care blood-testing devices should not be reused, after reporting an increase during the past 15 years in the incidence of hepatitis B and other bloodborne diseases associated with the use of the devices. The agencies also advised health providers to protect patients through the use of "safety" lancets and by always changing gloves when switching to a new patient, among other precautions.
