Oregon's middle-school students make gains in core subjects

Oregon middle-school students showed improvement in math, science and reading in almost every category, according to the results of 2008-09 assessment tests. Scores for elementary- and high-school students were mostly stagnant. State officials credited the middle-school performance to initiatives such as training and mentoring for educators, summer school and increased efforts to monitor lagging students and give them individualized attention.
