Qwest executive warns of optical-gear costs

Consumer demand for bandwidth threatens to spark huge spikes in the cost of optical components in the coming years, warned Qwest Communications Chief Technology Officer Pieter Poll after the telecom's purchase of 100Gbps Ethernet backbone gear in a move aimed at achieving economies of scale. "The concern I have is we are behind as an industry overall in terms of the ability to meet demands a few years out in a cost-effective fashion," he said.
