Report: Renewables to drive down coal-fired capacity in the EU

Renewable-energy expansion in the EU is projected to drive a long-term decline in old coal-fired capacity in the region, according to projections from Deutsche Bank. The EU will add about 21 gigawatts of renewable-energy capacity this year and 140 GW more from 2014 through 2020, while 28 GW of coal-fired capacity will close between 2012 and 2020, the projections showed. "Coal demand will drop this winter. Additional renewable capacity will displace gas first, but coal is next in line," said Kris Voorspools, an analyst with 70 Watt Consulting.
