Ala. reduces amount of stipends for NBCTs

Alabama will reduce stipends for National Board Certified Teachers this year to $3,500 from $5,000. The bonuses, first offered in 1998, were intended to keep high-quality teachers in the state and to entice more teachers to become certified. However, the number of NBCTs has grown from 28 in 1998 to 1,771 in 2010, and state officials said they could no longer afford the full amount of the stipends.
