OIG: Medicare auditors find $1.3 billion in improper payments

A report from the HHS Office of Inspector General said Medicare's recovery audit contractors are good at uncovering improper payments to health care providers, identifying $1.3 billion in such payments in fiscal years 2010 and 2011. The OIG called on CMS to do more to prevent improper payments and potential fraud, however, and CMS identified 46 areas of vulnerability that could lead to improper payments.
