Battery technology advances to meet smart grid demands

Making the most of renewable energy sources requires comprehensive, stable and reliable storage solutions that can be tapped in lieu of fossil fuels when power generation is lower than expected. So-called grid-scale storage relies on battery technology connected directly to the wholesale grid, with the potential to deploy on the gigawatt scale. Developers working to create these next-generation solutions include Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which is testing a 40-foot-long container unit housing more than 2,000 li-ion rechargeable batteries.
