Protecting the smart grid is a new priority for defense contractors

The same technology that promises to revolutionize energy transmission and use carries with it an inherent weakness, experts say: It's much more vulnerable than legacy power infrastructure. The more networked the grid becomes, the more avenues there are for cyber-attack, which is why defense specialists are designing ways to protect civilian energy systems. "This digital infrastructure provides a lot of new attack vectors into the electrical system that didn't previously exist," explains Mark Weatherford, security chief for the North American Electric Reliability Corp.
