Rail industry aims for a greener future

America's companies are increasingly using trains rather than trucks to ship products, saving money and reducing their carbon footprints, but there's more to do, industry insiders say. Officials say energy efficiency, cleaner rail-line production methods and improved land-management protocols remain priorities. "Sustainability is a powerful topic. In the railroad industry, it's in its infancy," says marketing executive George Carlic.
