FDA analysis finds biotech salmon is safe for environment, humans

An FDA staff report released Friday said that AquaBounty Technologies' genetically enhanced salmon is as safe as conventional salmon for humans and the environment. In an analysis posted on its website, the agency said that the product carries higher levels of insulinlike growth factor 1, but that it poses no significant risk when consumed by humans. The analysis was prepared for a meeting to be held later this month in which FDA officials will consider approving the sale of the fish to U.S. consumers.
