Northrop Grumman laser passes "first light" test firing

A high-energy laser built by Northrop Grumman fired successfully in a "first light" ground test on Sept. 7, raising hopes it could generate enough power to knock a ballistic missile out of the sky. Northrop Grumman Space Technology is developing the Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser under contract with Boeing Co.
