Tech industry wants to extend life of government's helium reserve

Technology companies including Intel, Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics are lobbying for the federal government to keep its helium reserve, citing the importance of the gas in manufacturing microchips and optical fiber. Legislation to extend the life of the reserve, which dates to the 1920s, has passed the House, but has yet to be taken up by the full Senate, and the reserve may be shut down Oct. 7 if Congress fails to act.
