Mold is a persistent problem for N.J. homes inundated by Sandy

New Jersey home inspectors report that the mold damage resulting from superstorm Sandy is the worst they've encountered, with one inspector saying such damage likely is present in about 20% of homes affected by the storm. Complicating the issue are inexpert attempts at mold removal by contractors or homeowners, the lack of federal standards for acceptable indoor mold levels and continuing concerns about mold-related health problems. A bill that the New Jersey Assembly approved in the spring would set standards for the evaluation and remediation of mold, while a second bill would require yearly registration by mold inspectors and cleanup workers.
