Research ties metformin to cognitive impairment in diabetes

Australian researchers found diabetes patients on metformin treatment showed worse cognitive performance than nonusers, and patients whose vitamin B12 levels were less than 250 pmol/L exhibited similar impairment. However, taking vitamin B12 supplements may help ease cognitive impairment caused by metformin-induced B12 deficiency in such patients, researchers wrote in Diabetes Care.
