Experts discuss long-term opioid use at PAINWeek conference

A PAINWeek panel of experts addressed the long-term use of opioid drugs for chronic pain and efforts to restrict opioid prescribing. Moderator Dr. Daniel Carr said patients with lower back pain and other conditions are "stigmatized, marginalized and blamed." Dr. Jane Ballantyne of the University of Washington said observational data and randomized, controlled studies do not address pain or whether opioid relief lasts and improves function and quality of life. Attorney Stephen J. Ziegler said a fuller understanding is needed of the risks and benefits of state restrictions on opioid treatments.
