Sewer systems around the country are grappling with wipes being flushed that clog pipes and contribute to costly and time-consuming repairs. Industry has developed testing guidelines for wipes manufacturers to use before products are marketed as "flushable," and companies are working with utility officials to sort through differences over testing procedures. A big contributor to the problem, manufacturers say, are products being flushed down toilets that shouldn't be flushed to begin with, such as baby wipes and paper towels.
