Chemical makers close plants as Hurricane Ike approaches

Major chemical makers, including Dow Chemical Co. and DuPont Co., were shutting down plants along the Gulf Coast in preparation for Hurricane Ike. The closures come just as the companies were restarting facilities in Louisiana that were closed because of Hurricane Gustav. DuPont said it was closing nine sites that could be affected by Ike, and German chemical maker BASF was closing six facilities.
