Cleaning, maintenance could become easier with futuristic materials

The Dome in London uses a self-cleaning building material that mimics the microscopic surface contours of a lotus leaf, shaping raindrops to carry dirt off of buildings, writes Philip Howes. The material is one of several building technologies such as self-healing concrete and thermobimetals that could decrease the upkeep that buildings require.
