New building technologies aim to make homes greener

Energy-efficient homes made up only 2% of new single-family housing construction in 2006, but comprised 16% of such starts in 2010, according to research firm McGraw-Hill Construction. These houses incorporate environment-friendly features such as blown-fiberglass insulation, heat-pump water heaters, easy energy-use monitoring and concrete countertops.
