Counterfeit drugs could be identified through nanotech bar codes

TruTag Technologies has developed silicon dioxide-based bar codes that could be used with medications to authenticate their source of origin. The tiny bar codes can be turned into a powder that would be ingestible, if needed, Tracey Schelmetic writes. TruTag President Kent Mansfield said, "A gram of TruTag microparticles contains over 12 million unique tags."
