Social media viewed as teaching tool, despite potential for distraction

As more schools hand out mobile technology, such as tablet computers, it may be increasingly difficult to ensure that students are using the devices purely for academic purposes. However, Mike Vanoort, technology director for one Iowa school district, says his district does not block access to social media because it can be used as a teaching tool. "Some of those tools can be very educational. We use Twitter to get out information to students in that way, so it doesn't really pay to fight it," he said.
