Researchers aim to establish treatment standards for sepsis

The NIH is funding a five-year study that will seek to develop a standard protocol for diagnosing and treating sepsis in the emergency room. Researchers hope to find "golden hours," during which certain treatments can stop the progression to severe sepsis, said Derek Angus, chairman of the department of critical care at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
