Change for change's sake isn't innovative

When a new boss takes over an organization, he or she is often tempted to make sweeping changes to ensure a distinct mark is left on the company, notes Jeffrey Pfeffer. These superfluous changes can end up ruining the qualities that made the group successful, he adds. "Smart leaders ... focus on changing only what needs to be changed because it isn't working," he writes, "And they keep what works, even if it's a legacy from the past."
