Researchers tout method that turns orange peels into bioplastics

Researchers at the U.K.'s University of York are developing a method of turning orange peels into a form of plastic using powerful microwaves to extract biodegradable chemicals from the peels. "The microwaves activate the cellulose, and that triggers the release of chemicals or further chemical reactions inside the orange peel," said James Clark, a green-chemistry professor at the university. The research looked into orange peels because they are "an excellent example of a wasted resource," Clark added.
