USGBC to introduce LEED credit to make buildings safer for birds

The U.S. Green Building Council will include LEED points for buildings that prevent birds from crashing into glass walls and windows -- something that 90,000 birds in New York City do each year. Some ways to make the glass less mirror-like and keep birds away include decals, screens, shades, films and nets. "To the extent that the LEED credit raises awareness, I think we'll see more architects sensitive to these issues, which will lead to more companies developing solutions," said Brendan Owens, a vice president at USGBC.
