Saudi Arabia picks female-directed "Wadjda" as first Oscar contender

The first Saudi Arabian feature film directed by a woman, "Wadjda," will be the country’s first-ever official entrant to the Academy Awards. “We are proud of the film as an authentic representation of our country and culture and are pleased to see the themes of the film resonate with audiences well beyond out borders," nominating committee head Sultan Al Bazie said of Haiffa al Mansour’s movie.
