Labor Department approves federal benefits for same-sex spouses

The Department of Labor has ruled that same-sex spouses are entitled to employer-provided benefits such as insurance and retirement benefits. The department's guidance, issued Wednesday, said the terms "spouse" and "marriage" would apply to same-sex couples, even if the state in which they live or work does not recognize same-sex unions. The ruling comes after this year's Supreme Court decision striking down key provisions of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
