Snakes on the plain: Robotic serpents may eventually roam the surface of Mars

Researchers in Europe are developing serpentine robots that they say could be the perfect vehicle for a comprehensive exploration of Mars. Experts say the snake-bots -- which are being built by Norwegian engineers with funding from the European Union's space agency -- are better suited for the Martian terrain than wheeled vehicles such as the NASA rover Spirit, which couldn't navigate the Red Planet's soft sand.
