$400 baggage fees give passengers a good reason to carry on

Several major airlines have raised their fees for checked bags weighing more than 71 pounds. Continental Airlines is tacking on $400 fees on most international flights for a checked bag weighing between 71 and 100 pounds. American Airlines is ringing up a $450 fee for that same bag on its Asian flights. United Airlines is following Continental's lead and charging $400 for checked bags that weigh between 71 and 99.9 pounds on intercontinental flights.
