IRS surveys firms on tax compliance

The Internal Revenue Service has issued about 2,000 audit letters as part of its Employment Tax National Research Project. The project is designed to help the agency reduce losses from tax under-reporting. It will survey a total of 6,000 firms over three years on topics such as employee classification, executive pay, fringe benefits and payroll taxes.
