Abbott: We must shift away from just studying languages

American education must shift the practice of studying language and move toward teaching methods that emphasize using second languages to communicate effectively, ACTFL Executive Director Marty Abbott writes. Provisions in the National Standards for Foreign Language Education that encourage teachers to look beyond the classroom for learning opportunities are key to this effort, Abbott writes. Such provisions allow students to open themselves up to valuable chances to interact with native speakers.
