Consumer product manufacturers are trying to change the negative public perception of chemicals in their products, which may require a "paradigm shift," said Carol Hood, a technical leader at Clorox's Safety Center of Expertise. Bob Hamilton, regulatory policy director at Amway, recommends manufacturers promote affirmative education about the consumer benefits of their products. For example, the American Cleaning Institute has teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to promote hand hygiene in the school environment to cut down on absences.
