Joint Commission calls for strict heparin rules at hospitals

The Joint Commission issued a safety alert urging hospitals to adopt measures such as computerized drug orders or bar-code technology to prevent medication mistakes involving heparin and other blood thinners. The warning is in light of 32 reports -- including 28 deaths -- of errors linked to such drugs that the commission received between 1997 and 2007.
