Cricket will serve as AT&T's budget line, CEO says

AT&T will call on Leap Wireless' Cricket brand to appeal to more price-sensitive subscribers, CEO Randall Stephenson said Tuesday, referring to AT&T's deal to buy the prepaid carrier. "We will compete very aggressively using that brand," Stephenson said, adding that he expects the deal to close early next year. He also told an investor conference that AT&T will roll out LTE Broadcast technology over the next few years to deliver more narrowly targeted content. Stephenson detailed the carrier's plan to convert its infrastructure into a platform based on Long-Term Evolution, IP and cloud computing by 2020. He urged federal regulators to move more swiftly to review AT&T's proposal to ditch its copper lines in favor of the IP and wireless-based network.
